The National Weather Service is using a new experimental Hurricane Wind Scale. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale uses the familiar 1 to 5 categorization but is only going to be derived by the storm’s wind speed and does not consider the storm surge, or central pressure, of the system.
The hope is that this new scale, if adopted, would help remove the confusion that some people have around the current storm classification system and inconsistencies between storm instances.
